Vestry Listening Sessions, Summaries
Four sessions held quarterly through Jan 2019
Purpose: The Vestry Listening Sessions will help ensure our church remains a relevant, inclusive, vibrant, and productive asset to our congregation and the communities we serve.
Format: Held quarterly in Williams Hall at 11:30am, each session will focus on a single purpose or question. A member of the Vestry will moderate and the congregation’s insights will be collected during these one-hour gatherings. The information harvested will be documented (scroll down on this page for summaries) and used as valuable input to the Church’s discernment process. “A Covenant for Conversation” will guide each Listening Session; click here to read the covenant.
Please RSVP: Each Listening Session will be followed by lunch. Please email Administrative Assistant Ellen Woodard or call our parish office at (989) 631-2260 to let us know if you plan to attend.

SUMMARY TAKEAWAYS FROM PAST LISTENING SESSIONS
These Vestry Listening Sessions yield much feedback. Parishioner input, as summarized by vestry scribes, is available by clicking on links below or reading printed copies posted to church bulletin board outside Williams Hall.
#2 Engagement: What are the barriers to leveraging your gifts and better serving the church?
#1 Creating a Culture of Open Communication: How can we communicate our thoughts, insights, and concerns, and more effectively?
Series Context: The role of the Vestry in the Episcopal Church is clearly defined in three governing documents. According to the 2015 Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church, the Vestry “shall be agents and legal representatives of the Parish in all matters concerning its corporate property and the relations of the parish to its clergy” (Canons I.14.2). The 2014 Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Eastern Michigan (Cannon 22) and St. John's Bylaws last revised in 2017 (Article V) offer specific and more detailed roles for the Vestry and its members.
However, and put most simply, the Vestry is a group of individuals seeking to discern, with the rector, what the parish is called to do and to have oversight of that work.
The members of Vestry are your elected representatives, your voice. Therefore, if we are to grow as one, we need to listen to one another. In the spirit of this simple truth, the Vestry is scheduling a series of quarterly Listening Sessions geared to building a strong, inclusive community focused on our mission now, and into the future. Please, lend your voice.
Feedback Now: If you have feedback that you would like to share with the Vestry now, please pick up the phone and call. Members of the Vestry are listed in each Sunday bulletin along with their phone numbers. Vestry member photos are also posted here and on the bulletin board outside Williams Hall.
Throughout the year, St. John's offers additional opportunities to gather in prayer, service, study and fellowship. Please click on "Announcements" or "ENewsletter" in the menu at the bottom of this page to see if such an opportunity is coming up soon.
