St. John’s Hopes for Year 2 of Partnering with Howard’s Friend Bike Ride
As we did last year, St. John’s, along with a few pedaling parishioners, aims to represent at this month’s Howard’s Friend Bike Ride in Midland. Our Rector, The Rev. Ken Hitch, arranged with event organizers last year to conduct a brief, ecumenical bicycle blessing for a safe year and we'll offer the same this year at the event's new start location: Emerson Park, Midland (picnic shelter D).
The Blessing of the Bicycles is an annual tradition first held in 1999 at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. Short prayers are shared, including a remembrance of those who died while riding, and then riders and bicycles are blessed for a safe and healthy upcoming season.
Our Blessing of the Bicycles will be marked by a banner, near Howard’s Friend Ride registration and food tables—all located at Midland’s Emerson Park. Event registration begins at 7:30am; the Blessing of the Bikes will begin at 8:00am; rides begin at 8:30am. Rides span the length of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail up to Clare… all ages and cycling skill levels may participate, riding 5, 10, 40, 60...or as many miles as you'd like!
Learn more about Howard’s Friend Ride; registration still open!
Bring your bike to be blessed even if you can’t stay for the ride. All are welcome… please spread the word!
