When your child comes into the 4&5’s class we begin by enjoying some time together, sharing stories, talking and reading a book that sets the scene for the day. We are assisted by aides and co-op parents, allowing us to break into small groups of 5 or 6 children to work on a small group activity that may involve literacy skills, math skills, motor skills, cooperation, exploration or just plain fun! When we complete our small group task, the children are free to play and explore. They may choose to build a structure in the block room or to play house or do puzzles or visit the art room where an activity is planned. There is also play dough and easels and a sand table. They may need to move and groove and will choose to ride bikes or scooters in our circle room. If the sun is shining, the class may venture outside to our playground. We end our day with a group clean up and a snack, giving us time to socialize and be ready to go home.
The time we share together at preschool is planned around the children. We know how important it is for them to play and how much is gained from rich play experiences. We also know that many of them will be off to kindergarten when they leave us, and we want them to be ready! Balancing these goals is our job. We work with you and your child to create a learning path that is both appropriate and comfortable and is, above all, enjoyable.
